Trade and Commerce

The Nature of Faerie Biology imposes limits on the trade of Worldstree. There is simply  no need to transport large amounts of Foodstuffs, food being a luxury item for all but Celenes. Also, there are no Beasts of Burden up to the task of large scale overland trade. Monsters are another factor - they are often intelligent enough to stalk trade routes and some, especially the Dragons, have a hunger for Treasure. Overland trade is the province of Centaurs, who are capable of hauling wagons. In Treesland, the Gypsy Tribe is responsible for what little commerce travels the roadways.

Most Regions are selfsufficient in the Necessities. They can make enough Clothing and Tools, and have enough access to Metals and other Materials to get by. Thus by far trade is dominated by Luxuries (especially Spices) and Magical Paraphenalia, especially Enchantments and Ingredients. This is especially practical as these items are highly valuable and generally not large. Trade is usually conducted via Silver coins or barter.

The Forest Road is the main trade route for all of Worldstree. Gems from the Hse'eliae, via Werelions, make their way to the StormySea and the fleets of Mar-Adimore. From there, the ships of the Naelathe (green sails), Elathe (gray sails), Alathae (white hulled) and Celenes (moon prowed) sail to their homelands and beyond. All of the Great Cities of the Elves are linked by these Rivers, which, if they weren't so in the first place, have been made Navigable via Magic. It is possible, though uncommon, to sail even to the Farthest Sea or into the Mistflower Jungles. All vessels employ ShipMages, masters of Lorecraft related to the winds and currents.

Aerial Trade is also practiced, and is the province primarily of the Elathe, who have created a few Zeppelin Ships and have a system of Gryphons who serve the Royal Houses (Gryphons do NOT carry common merchants). A few Naelathe carry out trade via Hippogriffs and Flying Carpets. These means, especially the Zeppelins and Carpets, are highly subject to the depredations of Monsters, and must be heavily defended.

The Celenes have another means of trade:  the MoonGates, which permit instaneous travel between StoneCircles. Industrious Astrologers have erected Menhirs throughout Worldstree. Though two circles can be connected only one night each year, there is often a continous stream of travelers throughout the GateNights. Celenes charge quite a toll on merchandise moving through the MoonGates. They have also constructed a NightGates, the only means of interMythic trade in Worldstree.
