Rangers

Rangers are a suborder of the Savants. They are protectors of the wild areas, a kind of buffer between civilization and nature, guerilla warriors, an intelligence gathering agency and much much more. In order to be a Ranger, a being must first pass the rank of Neophyte Savant. Rather than retreat to study the mysteries with the Heirophants, a Ranger begins his Journeyman years. A Journeyman may own no more than he can carry and is not allowed to sleep indoors. He is expected to roam throughout Worldstree, perfecting his knowledge of the natural world to a degree that few Savants attain. He must learn to survive in various climates, learn the speech and ways of animals, befriend isolated pockets of Faeries and Celenes, all while staying attuded to the ideal of Balance. During this time he is completely on his own, though subject to the authority of Savant-Adepts and the RangerLord if he should encounter them. If he proves himself to be wise and true,  he will be sought out by the RangerLord and assigned to the tutelage of a Savant-Adept in a particular area. There he will learn the advanced rituals concerned with Nature, and also certain ritural available only to Rangers. At this level, he is known as a Ranger-Adept, and all such warriors form a kind of empathic bond that allows them to stay in communion with each other. Beyond the Savant-Adept in his area, the only higher power in a Ranger's world is the RangerLord, who resides permanently in LongParting and bows only to the Savant-Center.
