Pixies come many types, but the common are Vespids and Apoides . Vespids are larger and aggressively carnivorous, whereas Apoides feed only on nectar. In basic body shape, they resemble Elves with bee abdomens attached to their butts. Both races display a variety of coloring, but most consist of pattern of yellow or red and black. Both have two pairs of wings that lie along their backs when not in use. Wings can be transparent or black. Both races also have three standard sexual manifestation, workers (sterile females), drones and queens. Some species also have a special Nurse caste that can create poitions useful for the Hive. All Pixies have large compound eyes and antennae.
Pixies lives in structures that they fashion from natural materials. Vespids build large paper nests and Apoides build wax and honey filled hives inside of old trees. Usually, about twenty vespids or fifty apoides live together in a hive. The hives dominate a large portion of a single tree. The hive can be over 30 feet in diameter.
Worker vespid stings cause a type of paralyzation that sends its victims into a state that remsembles hibernation, but all other Pixie stings are usually lethal.
Pixies hibernate during Evening, leaving only a few guards and devoted nurses awake at a time.
Vespids
Vespid workers are usually about eight inches tall. They are agressive and cruel, and not particularly bright. They are noted for playing stupid sadistic games with their paralyzed prey, and for fighting amoungst themselves. They are vengeful and never forget a slight.
Vespid drones only exist while there are unmated queens in the hive. After mating, the queen kills the stingless drones.
Apoides
Apoides are around six inches tall. They are somewhat naive creatures that spend most of their time gathering nectar or caring for their extensive flower gardens. They will become angry only when the hive or the queen is threatened.
For the most part, Apoide drones entertain their Queen. They rarely do any work or service any function. However, they are devoted guardians of the hive, and are more combat worthy that workers due to their potential for multiple stings (Apoide workers die after they sting).
Queens
Pixie queens are usually very old, very wise and very powerful. They live in the heart of the hive and only emerge in Morning to mate. Many Queens, bored with their confinement, have vast collections of beautiful gold and jewels. Queens are always at least four inches taller than drones and usually have distinctive body coloration. Apoide queens lay their eggs in small wax cell. They eggs hatch into grubs that are fed honey until they mature. Vespid queens lay their eggs in the paralyzed bodies of small mammals (most often rabbits and squirrels), and the grubs develop inside the host's body. Both species spend up to twenty-five years as larvae (vespid poison also induces a form of stasis). Apoide grubs that will become queens require royal jelly, whereas vespid prequeens require a Faerie host.
There are several other types of Pixies.
The most commonly encountered to the Bumblee, but there are also GallVespids
in the Mistflower Jungles, and
Figspids, which are actually not evil at all.
