The Sun and the Seasons

The path of the Sun around the disk of Worldstree is no simple circle. Although it is always in the sky the same amount of time, it varies both its apparent origin and zenith widely. On "midwinter", it rises from the south-southwest, traces an arc completely around the Ringwall Mountains but barely rises above them. It sets again in the far south-southeast after twelve hours of mobile sunset. On "midsummer", on the other hand, the sun rises from the north-northwest, ascends to the actual zenith and sets in the north-northeast.

This has some unusual implications. The sun NEVER shines from the direct south and the southern part of the disk is a frozen sea, called Icemarches. The far north in turn is Burning Desert. It is Myth (and thus Truth) that the Sun maintains some structure beyond the Buring Desert which he circles and guards but cannot approach. The south is in turn the Land of Shadows and Evil.

The Seasons of Worldstree are mostly a matter of lighting. It is probably best to call them Twilight, Morning, Noon and Evening (followed by Twilight).

The unusual course of the Sun in not to imply that there is no Night (for what is Light without Darkness?). At the end of the Sun's daily course, he dips below the Ringwall Mountains and is not seen for twelve hours. Presumably, he rests. There are other celestial bodies visible in the Night Sky, including two Moons and other bodies that follow paths so complex they are known  only by Celenes.

The Sun, like the Moons, is a Dragon, whose proper name is Solaris.
