Makara is a generic word meaning any fabulous beast that is half fish and half mammal. The Capricorn (half fish, half goat) and the Hippocampus (half fish and half horse) are the standard examples, but it goes far beyond that. There are also elephant, lion and tiger makaras, these much larger and more fearsome than the previously mentioned morphs.

Some Makara are inimical to man, some friendly, some can be swayed either way. Others are tricksters that love to help Beings but test and tease them first. The nature does not seem to be species related. They have limited intelligence. They cannot speak nor do they understand Common speech. They can sense distress, however, and will respond to it as per thier individual natures.

Makaras are the great enemies of Werephins, though Alathae have made some attempts at taming them.
